Materials and construction
Bicycle brake discs are usually made of stainless steel or aluminum, which provides strength and corrosion resistance. More expensive discs, such as Shimano XT Ice-Tech, have a multi-layer structure with an aluminum core, which provides faster heat dissipation during braking, thereby reducing surface temperature and improving braking efficiency.
Disc diameter and mounting
Disc diameters range from 140 mm to 203 mm. Smaller discs (140 – 160 mm) are usually used on lighter bicycles or city models, while larger ones (180 – 203 mm) are used on mountain bikes where more powerful braking is required. In addition, discs can be mounted in two ways: with a center lock (CL) or with a 6-bolt connection. The Center Lock system ensures faster and easier installation, while the 6-bolt system offers wider compatibility with different rims and calipers.
Maintenance and replacement
To ensure long-term performance of your brake discs, it is important to regularly check their condition. The discs should be smooth, without cracks or large scratches. If you notice unusual noise or reduced braking efficiency, the disc or pads may need to be replaced. It is also important to make sure that the disc is installed correctly and securely attached to the wheel to prevent any movement or vibration during braking.
